Today, during its monthly meeting, the Saint-Lambert City Council unanimously adopted a resolution calling on Transport Canada and Via Rail to maintain the stop located at the Saint-Lambert station due to the negative impacts that a reduction or elimination of stops would have on downtown foot traffic and the residential and economic appeal of the Saint-Lambert area.

This position follows reports that the Montréal Metropolitan Airport (MET) has submitted a request to relocate this stop to the EXO station in Longueuil.

“We have nothing against the idea of adding a stop at the Longueuil station—quite the contrary,” said Mayor Loïc Blancquaert. “Every improvement to sustainable transportation services allows a growing number of motorists to choose public transit for their daily commutes. On the other hand, reducing service would run counter to our collective commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, the Saint-Lambert station is known for its steady ridership and integrates seamlessly with the EXO and RTL networks. We see no benefit in this closure and will advocate against it with all decision-making bodies involved in this matter,” concludes Mayor Blancquaert.

A Heritage to Preserve

From a heritage perspective, the Saint-Lambert station is a major symbol of Canadian railway history. Closely linked to the development of the Canadian National Railway network and the opening of the Victoria Bridge, it occupies a strategic position—both historically and functionally—within the national railway network.

An Indispensable Railway Corridor

The Saint-Lambert station also serves as a key access point to the rail corridor connecting Quebec and Ontario, as well as to connections to Ottawa, Toronto, and New York. It allows residents of Saint-Lambert and neighboring municipalities to benefit from an efficient intercity transportation service that complements existing public transit networks, notably those of the RTL and EXO.

The resolution adopted at today’s meeting will be forwarded to VIA Rail Canada Inc., the Canadian Minister of Transport, relevant federal and provincial members of parliament, the MET, CN, the mayors of the Longueuil metropolitan area, and the Union des municipalités du Québec.
