The Ville de Saint Lambert is working on a project for a second pedestrian and bicycle bridge at the Saint-Lambert locks

Today, Mayor Loïc Blancquaert and the Executive Director of the Société du parc Jean-Drapeau, Ms. Véronique Doucet, announced the launch of a pre-feasibility study for the construction of a second pedestrian and bicycle bridge at the Saint-Lambert locks. Representatives from the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, as well as the federal Member of Parliament for Brossard—Saint-Lambert, Ms. Alexandra Mendès, were also in attendance.

This project is the result of a tripartite collaboration between the Montreal Metropolitan Community (CMM), the Société du parc Jean-Drapeau, and the City of Saint-Lambert. It addresses a commonly expressed need, as the mayor explains:

“We identified the need to explore the possibility of building a second pedestrian and bicycle bridge at the locks to avoid long wait times of 30 to 40 minutes when a boat is passing through. With a view to promoting sustainable mobility, this project is necessary to encourage people to make greater use of eco-friendly modes of transportation instead of driving alone to and from Montreal.”

This project is about to take its first step with the completion of a feasibility study, the terms of reference for which were presented by Ms. Véronique Doucet. This study aims to evaluate development options that would ensure the continuity of active transportation at the Saint-Lambert locks, between the city of Saint-Lambert and Jean-Drapeau Park. It will serve to document existing constraints, analyze current disruptions related to lock operations, and identify potential solutions to improve the flow and safety of active travel in this strategic area.

“This report is essential for determining whether the project is viable. We hope it will outline three possible intervention scenarios, along with the associated summary costs. It would thus allow us to move forward with concrete and reliable data for this project, which is ambitious but necessary for the community,” concluded Mr. Loïc Blancquaert.

Preliminary results regarding the project’s feasibility are expected in August. If the findings are positive, the second phase of the study, which will outline the scenarios, will be completed by the end of September.
