Solar eclipse on April 8: Get ready!

Published on 13 Mar 2024

Éclipse solaire du 8 avril 2024

On April 8, 2024, a solar eclipse will take place in the Quebec sky. Spectacular and rare, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow on the Earth.

Although fascinating, this phenomenon is very dangerous for your eyes, and watching it without adequate protection can cause permanent damage to your eyes.

If you wish to observe this phenomenon, you absolutely must wear certified eclipse glasses, since regular sunglasses do not protect your eyes during a solar eclipse. The Direction de santé publique de la Montérégie recommends that you order your eclipse glasses from a certified retailer.

Being outdoors or driving during a solar eclipse is not a health hazard if you're not looking directly at the sun. However, if you can avoid it, do so!

To help you prepare, we invite you to consult the instructions issued by the Government of Quebec.
