It is essential that emergency services are able to get to where they have been summoned as quickly as possible. The civic numbers used to identify the house number must be clearly displayed and sufficiently lit so that they may be easily seen from the road.

Whatever the type of appliance, you could cause a fire if you use it incorrectly. To ensure they are safe and efficient, wood stoves must be properly maintained. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, use only certified stoves, and have the installation inspected by the Longueuil agglomeration’s Fire prevention division of the Service de sécurité incendie.

Any installation or modification to a chimney, a fireplace, or heating equipment requires a permit from the Urban Planning, Permits and Inspection Department.

Every dwelling and private home must have at least one smoke detector per floor, including the basement, which must be maintained in good working order.

It is the owner’s responsibility to install the number of smoke detectors required in each dwelling and to repair or replace them if they are faulty. A tenant must ensure that a smoke detector is working properly, namely by changing the batteries regularly. If a detector is faulty, the tenant must inform the owner without delay.

Barbecues are allowed in the backyard or rear setback of a building. Portable roasters or grills cannot be used indoors. Outdoors, these roasters and grills must be installed at least 60 cm (24") from any opening in a building (door or window). Moreover, any charcoal-burning appliance must rest on fireproof material and be kept at least 50 cm (20") away from anything that can catch fire.

Propane cylinders must not be stored inside a building, a garage, or an outdoor shed.

In case of a fire, it is vital to be able to leave a building quickly. For this reason, exits and balconies, including the passages leading to them, must be kept clear of obstructions. In winter, snow must be cleared away from the exits and balconies.

It is forbidden to set off firecrackers or fireworks, or light a fire outdoors, unless under the supervision of a certified Fireworks Supervisor who has a permit issued by the City.

Open-air fires are strictly forbidden on the territory of Saint-Lambert. Outdoor fireplaces with metal screens are permitted, providing they do not create excessive smoke. As an example, it is forbidden to burn leaves.

Homeowners or occupants are responsible for chimney sweeping. It is recommended that you have your chimney cleaned at least once a year if you heat with wood, or every two years if you heat with oil or natural gas.

The City recommends that you have your chimney cleaned by a professional chimney sweep certified by the Association des professionnels du chauffage (APC).
